Harvey is a city in Cook County Illinois, founded in 1891 by Turlington W. Harvey. The city is a south suburb of Chicago with a population approximated at 25,000. The city prospered during postwar years and reached its peak population in 1980. Harvey is bordered by the villages of Dixmoor and Riverdale to the north; Dolton, Phoenix, and South Holland to the east; East Hazel Crest to the south; and Hazel Crest, Markham and Posen to the west. Now under new leadership with the election of Mayor Christopher Clark and a dynamic team of Aldermen and an experienced administrative team operating with integrity, pride and unity, the City of Harvey has planned for a better future and a higher quality of life for residents. The City of Harvey is governed by a "Landlord-Tenant Act." The purpose of this ordinance is to allow the City to assist Landlords and Tenants with handling property maintenance issues and licensing landlords to operate their business. The mission of the Harvey Police Department is to serve and protect both citizens and visitors of the great Harvey community. The Harvey Police Department consists of 71 full-time sworn police officers and 2 part-time police officers: Consisting of Patrol Officers, Sergeants, Detectives, Investigators, Commanders, Deputy Chiefs and a Chief. The officers are divided into five command units: Patrol, Investigations, Internal Affairs, Service Bureau, and Traffic.
