Highland is a city in Madison County Illinois with a population estimated at 9,900. The city was settled in the early 19th century by Swiss-German settlers. The town was founded 1837 and first named Helvetia in accordance with the Heritage of the town's Swiss-German founding members. The town voted to change its name to the English version - Highland, in the early 20th century. Currently, Highland is home to many worldwide trade industries, such as the Basler Electric Co., Cooper B-Line, Inc., Wicks Organ Company, Korte Construction Company, Korte Luitjohan Contractors, Highland Supply Corp., Highland Machine, and the Wall Street Journal's Midwest printing operation. Many smaller businesses also call Highland, Illinois home, offering a diversity of products and services usually only found in larger cities.

The mission of the Highland Police Department is to work in partnership with the community to protect life and property, solve neighborhood problems, and enhance the quality of life in our City.
Public Safety is a top priority in Highland. Highland’s outstanding public safety record is a testimony to its residents and professionally trained police force. The Highland Police Department is staffed with 20 sworn officers and eight support staff, operating 24 hours a day 365 days a year.
The heart of the police department is the communications center, which provides dispatching services for the police, fire and emergency medical services in the city of Highland. With a state of the art 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) located at the Highland Police Department, residents have access to highly efficient and quicker services.
