Markham is located southwest of the southern tip of Lake Michigan. Markham began in 1925 with a population of under 300. The village was named for Charles H. Markham, the president of the Illinois Central Railroad. 10,000 years ago the area is claimed to have been a beach. After countless ages of geologic swamps, marshes and sloughs, the prairies dominated the landscape with groves of trees, flowers, and wildlife in abundance and Markham is now a suburban city in Cook County Illinois with a population of about 12,500.
